Description:
Musically avant-garde elements have been utilised in film scores for decades, usually as shock elements to denote horror or the otherworldly. In recent times, modern composer Philip Glass has enjoyed varying degrees of success adapting his minimalist techniques to film scoring. Given that background, Don Davis's powerful, innovative score to the Wachowski brothers' 1999 sci-fi hit The Matrix has all the makings of a landmark. Utilising his extensive interest and training in the avant-garde, Davis has composed what's been touted as the first "New York school postmodern" film score, a jarring departure from his hugely successful work as an orchestrator of such populist fare as Titanic, Pleasantville, A Bug's Life and Toy Story. The Matrix weds Davis's mastery of musical detail and coloration to a largely atonal postmodern concerto that's complex, dark and unrelenting. Many film scores have driven tonal writing and heroic motifs into the ground; Davis's deft, sparing use of them here places them in stark, effective relief. The Matrix offers up a rewarding orchestral challenge that may just be a decade--or two--ahead of its time.

Few knew what The Matrix was as it flashed it's impressive graphical trailer across the screen. Some of our mentally challenged friends still don't know! In any case, what most DO know is that The Matrix is one heck of a film. Out of a world of re-makes, repeats, and re-hashes, (ie Hollywood) the Wachowski brothers came up with a fresh idea...a fresh plot...a fresh script...a fresh sound. To go arm in arm with their breathtaking visual effects, the brothers looked to previous collaborator, Don Davis (Bound), to bring an equally unique sound to the film. Needless to say, Don Davis hit the bulls-eye, with some of the most suspenseful, adrenaline packed music of 1999. Davis truly deserves high marks for this score. This score is eerie. This score is scary. This score fits the film with a rare perfection that composers rarely experience.

While this score may not be one to listen to over and over, it's unique flavor and brilliance cannot be over stated. There isn't one "main" theme that works its way through the score, but, instead, there is a "feel" that winds its way from track to track. That feeling is that horror, of mystery, of 'what the heck is goin' on here?" The opening track is one the best of the CD, Main Title/ Trinity Infinity. This track sets the tone. It begins with swelling strings, brass, and woodwinds. It quiets down almost completely, but it is merely preparing itself for another volley of strings, brass and percussion accents. Don Davis' prepared piano rumbles in and out and finally the full orchestra joins in the battle. Horns blare. Percussions drive. The strings weave a musical net of fanaticism. It is a musical experience like few composers, aside from an Elliot Goldenthal or John Frizzell, have dared to bring the audience into.

Tracks 2 and 3 continue in the horrific dream (or is it reality?). I can hardly forget the scenes for which these pieces were scored for. Unable to Speak was just a little too convincing and Davis music help to solidify that. The Power Plant sequence was one of the most visually intense segments in the film and Davis use of chorus and horns is fantastically forceful. Welcome to the Real World gives us a break and let's us recoup from all of the tracks preceding it. With soft strings and a solo vocalist, we can catch are breath, but not for long. Track 5, The Hotel Ambush, starts off like some of the great 70's cop films, with congas and drums, but soon dives right back into the dark intensified music of the previous tracks. Unfortunately, this is another 1/2 hour release from Varese Saranbade. Evenso, It is well worth the price of admission, despite only having ten tracks of music. I doubt anyone's psyche could stand much more of Davis' intensely satisfying music in one sitting! After listening for one half hour, one is genuinely tired...but tired in a good way. Ever wonder what classical music on steroids might sound like? Don Davis has the answer!

Plot summary:
Joe Bauer, an Army librarian, is judged to be absolutely average in every regard, has no relatives, has no future, so he's chosen to be one of the two test subjects in a top-secret hibernation program. He and hooker Rita were to awaken in one years, but things go wrong and they wake up instead in 2505. By this time, stupid people have outbred intelligent people; the world is (barely) run by morons--and Joe and Rita are the smartest people in America. The purpose of the program set up by the Pentagon, called the "Human Hibernation Project," is designed so that the military can save their best men for when they're needed most. According to the officers heading the project, too many times the talents and expensive training of the best pilots and soldiers go to waste during times of peace. So they enlist Bauers (Wilson), the most under-achieving average guy they've got, to be the test subject for the initial hibernation experiment. Also participating in the top-secret program is Rita (Rudolph), a prostitute who agreed to take part in exchange for dropping some criminal charges against her, among other things. Of course, the experiment, which was to last only a year, goes under due to the arrest of Officer Collins, who is busted for heading a prostitution ring. Seeing as though he was in charge of the experiment, one of the only ones who knew of its existence, and "due to a lot of top-secret red tape... and the massive scandals and base closure that followed, Joe and Rita were forgotten about.
