Description:
Classic reunion of Cevin Key of Skinny Puppy and Bill Leeb of Front Line Assembly in a classic dark EBM release from the Wax Trax label. A must for fans of both bands.

-------------------------

"And we did this project with Bill (laughter) sort of to say. Well, we've gotten so many letters asking what would Skinny Puppy sound like if we still worked with him. But, needless to say, it's not something we're totally proud of or happy with. It was something that answered a lot of questions for a lot of people, and Wax Trax put us in the studio to do it. It's actually put a lot of things out of the way and behind us now. Now we're able to move on." -- Cevin Key, "Propaganda" Fall 1991

"In the past ten years, we've seen a lot of this cyberpunk imagery seep into the mainstream, Cyberaktif was an attempt to tie together all the imagery that everybody seems to associate with this sort of music. In a way, it was a challenge coming from the labeling department, resulting from the fact that we've been labeled 'cyberpunk.' Certain images were conjured up by that label. As a result, we set out to explore the idea of what a cyberpunk music would be like.' "We took a lot of the definitions of cybermusic that have been floating around, including the ones in the "Keyboard" cyberpunk cover story, and we wedded them with our past influences, especially this German electronic group called Liaisons Dangereuses, who released a self-titled LP in 1981 on Roadrunner, a European label. Their music has bleakness, like a blast of icy air whooshing out of your speakers. With Cyberaktif, we were attempting to make the definition of cybermusic a little more concrete, because it seems like a lot of bands who don't really fit in the category end up in it anyway." -- Cevin Key "Keyboard" January 1992

From all accounts, it appears that Cevin Key, Bill Leeb (a.k.a. Wilhelm Shroeder) and the late great D. R. Goettel had big plans and high hopes when they set out to create this album. And from other accounts, they believed that they failed in their mission to make THE definitive "Cyberpunk" album. While perhaps not as definitive as their EBM counterparts Front 242's masterpiece "Tyranny >For You<" released in the same year, it is still an amazing exercise in dark electronic music.

All of the elements of all of the somewhat random genre labels for this kind of music come into play; Industrial, Electronic Body Music, Mutant Synth Pop, Aggro, New Wave, Electro Terrorist, Rivet Head, Metal Beat Music, Darkwave, Techno-Goth, and last, but not least "Cyberpunk" which is perhaps the best of all of the mostly useless labels for this kind of music.

If anyone ever imagined what it would be like to put Front Line Assembly and Skinny Puppy into a blender, this is exactly what you get, and what you got. On the downside, just like blending two distinct elements together, you do sometimes get bland flavors along with the brilliant, and so "Tenebrae Vision" has it's low points. But songs like the surprisingly accessible "Nothing Stays" (released in an even better version on the single of the same name), and the upbeat "Paradiessiets" with German noise pioneer Blixa Bargeld (remixed hypnotically into the techno-pop "Meltdown (Parody)" on the "Temper" single). Other stand out tracks are; "Face To Face": an aggressive dark violent march, "Acid Cripple" which draws you in with a hypnotic TR-606 analog beat and then slams you in the face with roughly sampled digital drums. "House of Pain" is a more "subtle" (if you can call any song on this album that) piece and was originally going to be the title of the band instead of "Cyberaktif" (I wonder what that copyright fight would have looked like when the Irish-American rap band came around). All the other tracks, while sometimes falling under the category of "good background music" are nonetheless harsh aggressive electronic music at it's dark best. BUY IT!

All the songs are very inspiring and Patrick Doyle has made another fantastic soundtrack. Some of the songs are repetitive, however and the sudden changes in dynamics can be a little surprising. But other than that, it's a great soundtrack!
